Lucky by choice or chance?

What is the actual definition of being lucky? Perhaps the state everything going smoothly in the way we want things to be or even better. And most will associate luck with something vague which we do not control. Is that so?

People hope to be lucky but none takes the proper initiative to acquire luck. There are those who try to find more luck, those who constantly pray to God for it day and night and even some who resort to seek advice from witchdoctors. Is this the proper initiative? Well, to a certain degree, at least they do try to do something about their luck.

I believe, luck is something we human do control. Of course, occasionally, luck visits us, but it never sits by our side for long. Luck is something to be claimed by those who deserve it over others, those who worked hard and smart to improve their odds.

At times, we might pick up a wallet with RM1 000 in cash on the street, a fancy handset with the latest functions to date, or even receive a pair of concert tickets by a friend who is unable to attend it. Certainly, these are the occasional visits by Mr. Lucky that everyone welcomes. But do we actually deserve these? Maybe.

Perhaps we feel we deserve the RM1 000 because we just lost our job and it was a form compensation, the trendy handset because everyone around you has something similar or even better and the tickets because you have always been a great friend to the person. So, do we deserve these? Yes would be the most sincere answer of a shallow minded person.

At certain point, we might have finally obtained an A for History after series of E’s and D’s, won a match against a basketball team that has always beaten us in the past, or promoted to the post we have long desired in the office. At first glance, we are lucky. Yes, we are. But there is a need to distinguish whether it is ‘Mr. Lucky dropping by for a cup of tea again’ or ‘Ms. Lucky showing some signs of affection for you’.

This time, we can say we deserve the A if we have realized our mistakes and worked hard to improve the subject, deserve the victory if we have practiced for hours daily to improve our weakness in the game and deserve the promotion if we have delivered an excellent performance throughout our employment.

Take a closer look this time, it is not Mr. Lucky, it’s the sexy and hot Ms. Lucky. She says that you’re the man she long for and she wants to marry you to live side by side with you forever. Will you? Certainly! After all the efforts you have given and finally, Ms. Lucky, the dream partner of every person on Earth says that she wants to be by your side in life. What more can you ask for?

The academic knowledge, the skills of the game and the excellent performance are the things you gained by effort that will bring you luck almost forever to be lucky every day. These are not the attributes to just woo Mr. Lucky for the occasional visits anymore, but the attributes that makes Ms. Lucky love you so much!

However! Bear in mind that nothing remains the same forever, although things can remain for as long as they can be. Ms. Lucky may not love you forever, and up to certain degree, there might be conflict between you and her that she wants to file a divorce! So, it is your responsibility to not slack off but to continuously give your effort and as long as you keep improving yourself, she will love you for as long as that.

There is the law of cause and effect that we know cannot be ignored. With the exacerbating pollution, air becomes toxic to us. With the persisting deforestation, global warming becomes the result. On the other hand, development for medication has led to better global health. And the constant research for alternative fuel will ensure the continuous supply of energy for human activities.

Forget science, the cycle of cause and effect also applies to our behaviors and ultimately our luck. There is a sequence of initiatives in the pursuit of consistent luck; change of perception, change of the state of mind, change of behavior that ends in the acquisition of true luck. We should first change our perception that luck exists only as Mr. Lucky who visits us whenever he wants and not whenever we want, then set our mind to believe that only effort will bring us more luck. Finally, we will have to behave consistent in the principles we believe in and luck will appear in front of our doorstep as Ms. Lucky.

A quote by a successful man says that ‘the more I work, the more lucky I get’.
Think again.
